Description
5th Century Migration Period Sword by Kingdom of Arms, Man-At-Arms by Bruce Brookhart.
The Migration Period lasted close to 400 years, roughly from 300 to 700 A.D. There were several causes for this mass movement of whole tribes’ of people, but the most prevalent was the Huns pushing people from the East and the rumors of the wealth and rich farmland of Rome. The most well-known of these tribes were the Ostrogoths, the Visigoths and the Vandals. The Goths and the Vandals both went on to sack Rome itself. However around 450 A.D. there was also a mass migration by the Saxons from northern Germany and the Angels and the Jutes from southern Denmark to what would become England. After Rome had left Britain, it had reverted to warring tribes of Britons, some of which had used Saxon mercenaries. Some just stayed but others that returned to their homes carried with them the tales of the rich farmland and forests of Britain. It is not known for sure how much of this change was violent and how much was the simple merging of the various peoples. At least it was bloody enough for some Britons to flee to France and found what became Brittany on that landmass.
This sword takes inspiration from that area of Germany and Denmark, that were also made up of Anglo-Saxons. Swords were somewhat rare during these times; they were very valuable and only the wealthy or the best warriors would have them.
